Greetings from the Institute for Philanthropy, where in this new year we are proud to announce a new programme.
Much philanthropy is directed towards the needs of the young; but, at a time when great wealth will be transferred to a new generation, relatively little has been done to teach the skills of philanthropy to young people. This is a hole that it is crucial to fill, since soon those people will be responsible for many of the decisions, and much of the grant making, that will affect the generations to come.
Fittingly, then, we have called our programme Next Generation Philanthropy, the first of its kind in Europe. In partnership with the Institute for Family Business, we will be working with inheritors of UK family businesses between the ages of 18 and 28: we do so because we believe that we need to invest early in our future leaders. If philanthropy is to be a long and rewarding career, then it must have an enduring foundation; and so we look forward to giving these young people the knowledge, skills and networks that will stand them in good stead in the coming years of their charitable giving.
