The Institute for Philanthropy was founded in 2000. Since then, it has had a number of significant achievements, including:
Developing Guidestar UK, a comprehensive, national database of English and Welsh charities, freely available to inform donors and promote transparency and accountability in the voluntary sector
Advancing the sector’s knowledge of how best to work with major donors
Contributing to the government's review of the legal and regulatory framework of the voluntary sector
The institute was instrumental in introducing tax relief on gifts of shares, a change in law which has resulted in millions in additional gifts to
Organising seminars and lectures to encourage a 'giving age' in the UK and to help promote a transatlantic exchange of ideas and experiences
Explaining and encouraging the role of trustees and financial advisors in promoting giving
We successfully transferred The Philanthropy Workshop (TPW)the world’s leading programme in strategic philanthropy, from the Rockefeller Foundation in New York to London. Since its establishment thirteen years ago, over 175 individuals have completed the workshop and TPW is the first and best port of call for philanthropists who have just sold a company, launched their own giving programme or have inherited a leadership role in their family’s trust
In partnership with the Institute for Family Business we launched Europe’s first Next Generation Programme which offers the philanthropists of tomorrow the tools for effective giving;
Working with the Toskan Casale Foundation in Canada, we brought the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPi) to the UK, a programme to develop the community leaders of the future. Participating students are given hands-on experience of philanthropy that provides them with the skills and awareness to make a positive difference to their communities. YPi currently operates in 10 London schools and will expand into over 150 schools throughout the UK within three years;
In partnership with the Community Foundation Network we have introduced Community Foundation Futures, a training course which gives community foundation staff the skills to build local networks of donors, and to develop their foundation’s donor services.
