Trustee: Buzz Schmidt

 

Buzz Schmidt is a Visiting Scholar at Tuck Business School, Dartmouth, and Fellow of Tuck's Allwin Initiative for Corporate Social Responsibility.

In 1994, he founded ( and then led for 10 years) GuideStar USA, arguably one of the three or four cornerstones of US nonprofit sector infrastructure and "Web 1.0's most lasting and impactful survivor in the social sector." In 2003, he founded GuideStar UK to replicate the US service in England and Wales and, in 2005, founded GuideStar International (GSI), which establishes independent GuideStar services in other countries (notably Israel, Belgium, South Korea, India and Japan). GSI has now merged administratively with TechSoup Global, which he serves as a Trustee and Senior Strategic Advisor - GSI merged into TSG in April 2010. TSG operates programs to distribute technology products (donated by the major software vendors) and services (support, general technology knowledge, perspective and networking venues) through NGO partners in 32 countries. As one of his responsibilities, Buzz leads TSG's initiative to bring information and technology infrastructure to Haiti's civil society.

He chairs the board of the FB Heron Foundation (FBH) (New York), one of the most influential mid-sized foundations ($250 million) in the country and widely acknowledged as the pioneer of the movement to invest foundation endowment assets in mission-related investments. He serves on the board of the Nonprofit Quarterly in Boston, the Institute for Philanthropy in London.

He is a graduate of Princeton and Stanford's graduate schools of business and education. In 2000,he was named national Nonprofit Executive of the Year by the Nonprofit Times and one of Time Magazine's six visionary leaders of philanthropy.
