Background and Responsibilities

Established in 2000, the Institute for Philanthropy is the world's leader in the field of international donor education. An independent, non-profit organisation, our staff brings more than 50 years of experience working at the highest level in strategic philanthropy. With offices in London, Edinburgh and New York, we work closely with a global network of wealthy individuals and families, and in partnership with private companies, trusts, foundations and schools.

The Institute for Philanthropy aims to provide donor education, facilitate donor networks and raise the awareness of philanthropy in the United Kingdom and internationally. We believe that if you give people with the capacity to give the skills, knowledge and networks to give, they will increase the size and impact of their giving. In order to help achieve this goal, the Institute holds events to disseminate research on current philanthropic issues and bring donors and those working in the field together to discuss ideas and strategy. Our past events have included a breakfast panel discussion on charitable investments, a full day event for 200 school students taking part in our youth programme (the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative) and a strategy day and dinner on funding in the area of climate change.

In 2010 we will celebrate our 10th Anniversary. In recognition of this we will hold a variety of different events, including speaker dinners, expert panels and seminars. These events require a high level of planning and excellent execution. During the planning and invitation process there will be communication with suppliers or guests and this requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The successful candidate will assist in the planning and delivery of these events, researching venues and other suppliers, assisting with compiling guest lists and sending out invitations. This will require researching venue and catering, planning any IT requirements and ensuring successful delivery, assisting with the management of guest lists for invitations. Good time management and the ability to prioritise tasks is expected. The event team will work closely with most other staff members at one point or another and therefore good interpersonal skills are necessary.

In March 2011 The Philanthropy Workshop will journey to India.  The weeklong module there will explore the pressing social issues in this fast-growing and dynamic country. We will look at issue areas from the environment, to public health, human rights, to economic development.  Over a week of learning we will explore the full diversity of India’s extraordinary spectrum of offerings. We are provisionally exploring visiting either Mumbai or Delhi and their surrounding rural areas.

The Institute for Philanthropy is interested in finding an intern who can assist in researching and planning this cutting-edge module.  Interns will be required to research the latest models of social change in India, identify the key social, political and economic trends in the country, and assist on the compilation of a suitable briefing binder for the trip.  They will also be in charge of organising meetings and logistics for a planning trip that the Institute’s India team will be taking in December 2010.

The first 6 weeks of the internship will be spent researching Indian civil society and innovations, compiling information about NGOs for The Philanthropy Workshop team to review.  Subsequently the intern will lead on organising meetings and logistics for that December planning trip, and work closely to create a suitable itinerary for The Philanthropy Workshop’s team.  The second part of the internship will be consolidating the work of the planning trip: confirming a schedule for the actual module in March, and leading on the production of a learning briefing binder, to send out to trip participants.
