Think Philanthropy LSE Symposium

The Philanthropy Challenge is a unique initiative devised by the Institute of Philanthropy and LSE IDEAS. For the first time, students at LSE will receive the same type of tuition in strategic philanthropy as given to participants in The Philanthropy Workshop, the Institute's leading international donor education programme for wealthy individuals. The challenge commences on 10 March with a public panel discussion at LSE with two of the UK's most successful executives and philanthropists to examine the key concepts of modern philanthropy and its role in global society.

The panel discussion will be followed later in the year by three workshops, to be led by the Institute's Chief Executive Dr. Salvatore LaSpada. Here, teams of students will develop projects as to how, with a sum of money provided by LSE IDEAS, they can make a permanent difference in today's global society. The winning team's projects entry will be published as an academic paper by LSE, and the sum of money will be made as a grant to a non-governmental organisation selected by the winners.

This module, for Alumni of The Philanthropy Workshop, is set to be a fascinating journey into the heart of Africa to understand one of the most remarkable and complex development stories of the last 10 years. A beautiful place, with a tragic history and a promising future, Rwanda is an essential destination for donors interested in peace and reconciliation efforts; public health in the developing world; enterprise development; and food security.

The Power of Now – Breakfast Seminar on Spend Out Trusts and Foundations in the UK

With the kind support of The Tubney Charitable Trust, and alongside The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund - we are hosting a breakfast seminar on Spend Out Trusts and Foundations in the UK, from 9am to 11am.

We will present "The Power of Now", our new research paper on UK trusts and foundations who choose to spend their assets within a designated timeframe. There will also be a panel discussion featuring John Bothamley, Founder Trustee, Four Acre Trust; Colin McCrea, Senior Vice President and Country Representative, Republic of Ireland, The Atlantic Philanthropies; Ann Phillips, Partner, Charities & Education Team, Stone King Sewell Solicitors and Jessica Sklair, Director for Research, Institute for Philanthropy.
