The Philanthropy Workshop consists of three modules. Each of these provides opportunities for developing knowledge about strategic philanthropy, leadership development and collaborative problem solving.
These modules take place over the course of a year: one in London, another in the developing world and the third in New York. Participants are required to attend the modules in London and New York, and attendance at the developing country module is encouraged.
Each module explores critical elements of international and strategic philanthropy through a variety of methods, including site visits, case studies, skills-building sessions, seminars and discussions. Four goals link the modules: deepening one’s understanding of critical social issues and philanthropy’s role in solving them; sharpening strategic grantmaking skills; further developing one’s leadership; and building and strengthening the TPW Network.
In advance of the modules, participants are given preparatory reading. The Workshop faculty includes experts in the public, private and nonprofit sectors from all over the world. TPW was founded by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1995, and in 2006 TPW became a project of the Institute for Philanthropy in London.
Individuals who complete TPW can expect the following:
• A conceptual framework for strategic philanthropy;
• The skills to implement their own strategic philanthropic programme;
• A personalised mission statement and a work plan to put into
action the skills and tools gained from the Workshop;
• A confidential forum for peer group discussions;
• Interaction with local and international leaders who are defining and carrying out creative solutions to the pressing social issues of our time;
• A deeper understanding of one’s values and motivations for giving through exposure to a wide variety of perspectives; and
• Following participation in the Workshop year, the opportunity to become a member of the TPW Network, a global association of philanthropists and experts, which offers opportunities for continued interaction, collaboration and lifelong learning.
