A GROUP of three Year 9 pupils from Edmonton got a big thank-you from a children’s charity last Thursday evening after they won it a cheque for £3,000.

The cheque presentation came at the end of a competition at Turin Grove School in which groups of 13 to 14-year-old pupils nominated a local charity of their choice to receive a £3,000 grant donated through a programme run by the Youth And Philanthropy Initiative.

Starting with a visit to the charity of their choice, groups found out all they could about the charity during the Easter term, competing to be one of the six groups to be put forward for last week’s final presentation.

Derya Ozyurt, Gamze Taskiran and Abbie Jones had their public speaking skills put to the test before a panel of judges including a representative of the Royal Society Of Arts, who voted for the best overall presentation.

Two representatives from the children’s chosen charity, Enfield Parents And Children, picked up the cheque and provided insight into the work of the organisation. The charity works alongside parents or guardians to get the best education possible for children with special educational needs or at risk of exclusion.

Ashish Shah, 24, a teacher at Turin Grove, said: “The children loved participating in the scheme and were very enthusiastic throughout last term to be the ones competing in the final. Some of them now want to continue to volunteer for their chosen charity.”

This year’s hard-working pupils have been invited to a celebration evening run by YPI on June 28 at The Royal Institute Of Great Britain in central London, where they will be joined by winning groups from across the country.
